Flogging Molly’s Green 17 Tour

For the past decade, Flogging Molly has made an annual trek throughout the US each winter, counting down the days until St. Patrick’s day on the Green 17 Tour. This year marks the tenth and final pilgrimage for the band as they complete a 27-date tour, stopping all over the US, and ending in New Orleans. On February 28th, the band played in Silver Spring, Maryland to a sold-out crowd at the Fillmore, one of the larger venues in the D.C. area.

The tour has become an annual tradition for many die-hard fans of the band, which was evident in the amount of “Green 17” tour t-shirts from years past that could be seen in the crowd. The show was opened by Maryland

When Flogging Molly finally hit the stage, they kicked off their 25-song set with the high-speed “Screaming at the Wailing Wall.” Their set continued through classic hits such as “Every Dog has its Day,” and “Drunken Lullabies,” as well as more recent favorites from 2011’s Speed of Darkness. The band’s trademark Irish-folk-punk sound was brought to life with fiddle, slide whistle, banjo, mandolin, and whirling guitars. Between songs, vocalist Mike King took time to acknowledge how much their fans meant to them, wishing luck to the venues they had played at, and even dedicated the song “Whistles the Wind” to a local friend who had passed away recently. King acknowledged that, since this was the final Green 17 tour, the band wanted to play the “best” of their five albums so far, and so they did. The band hit it hard for over an hour, never once losing the wind in their sails. They returned to the stage after their 21st song, “What’s Left of the Flag” to play a four song encore ending with the hit “If I Ever Leave This World Alive.”

Though this is the final year for the Green 17 Tour, the band has no plans to quit. The Green 17 tour runs until March 23rd, after which the band plans on heading back to the studio to work on their sixth album.
