Incubus’ return to the Sands Event Center was monumental for a variety of reasons including the band’s recent return to the top of the rock and alternative charts. The band released “Trust Fall (Side A)” last year, a sequel to their 2011 release “If Not Now,” and from it came a breakthrough radio single, “Absolution Calling.”
Incubus has proven that they have staying power and that they can continually take time off from touring to get creative in the studio. The other 3 tracks on the EP were just as artistically and musically sound as “Absolution Calling” but have not been released to radio as of yet, The Side B EP will also be released later this year according to numerous media sources.
Riding on this new wave of popularity Incubus returned to the Sands Event Center last week, their first time back in the area since being the first band to perform in the venue when it opened in 2012. Doors opened well before the event to allow fans to get inside a bit early and grab a drink or two before the main event later that evening.
As it would turn out DJ Kilmore was set to do a DJ set in the Vision Bar following the conclusion of Incubus’ set, a special treat for Lehigh Valley fans on this tour one off. While it was disappointing to not have the full summer tour package at the Bethlehem show, Incubus treated this show just like every other date of their tour as they erected a massive LED screen and countless lights across the Sands Event Center Stage.
As show time rolled around at 9:30 the venue was flooded with an ample amount of fog before the band triumphantly to the stage while performing the mega hit “Wish You Were Here.” Incubus wasted no time at all getting things going and the crowd loved their decision to start with this song. From there the band marched around their discography as they tried to not tread too hard in any specific part of their now massive discography. The crowd roared to life on song four of the evening as they were treated to the new single, “Absolution Calling,” and they only become more energetic when Brandon Boyd starting the next song by simple asking if Bethlehem was in. This of course be the perfect lead in for fan-favorite “Are You In?”
The set weaved it’s way along and contained a few surprises along the way including a snippet of a Nirvana song and the house lights on the last song as the fire alarm rang out in the building. Not a single fan moved from their spot as the alarm echoed in the background and Incubus ended the set strong, alarm and all, taking a final bow on stage as they walked off with their logo displayed behind them. The light from the stage beamed across the packed venue that has just vibed, raged, and danced with them to start to finish. Incubus’ return to the Lehigh Valley was a long time coming, here is to hoping it doesn’t take another 3 years for them to come back but if it does hopefully they come back swinging like they did last week with new material and the same intensity they have had forever.
