Carnival of Madness | Photo Review
The Carnival of Madness has been a rock & metal touring mainstay for the past years since it’s debut in 2010 with Shinedown on the top bill. This year the tour saw Shinedown return to the tour as the headliner for the 3rd time in the United States as they were joined by Carnival of Madness veterans Halestorm who have also been a part of the tour in 3 different years.
The 2016 tour brought Halestorm back to their home state on Tuesday, August 9 as they came to the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Despite it being the middle of the week a respectable sized crowd turned up to welcome the band back to their home state and they held plenty of beers in the sky while doing so. Halestorm delivered a brief but well composed set that focused heavily on their new material. The band was very much aware of where they were and constantly thanked the crowd for their constant support over the years. Musically the set sounded different from some other performances we have seen with a deeper, also dropped tuning across the guitars which gave the show a heavier edge that really let Lzzy Hale’s vocals shine even brighter than usual. Pennsylvania will always support their “Storm” and they will always appreciate the fans from our state.
Shinedown took the stage shortly after and continued to build on the energy that Halestorm started working on during their set. The band focused heavily on their older material which appeased the fans who came out that night but there was a good amount of songs off their newest release as well. “Diamond Eyes” in the early part of the set was met with one of the loudest cheers as the song started and the sing-a-long during “45” later in the night was moving beyond words. The band doesn’t always perform that song these days so Shinedown fans were given a rare treat with that song’s inclusion in the setlist. The Carnival of Madness tour has become a rock mainstay for Shinedown and many other band’s and hopefully it will continue to have success for the next 5 years as it has so far.
