New York City based dark-pop artist HOLDN today released her long-awaited single, “Civil War.” Through ‘Civil War’, HOLDN utilizes her New York City roots to draw sonic inspiration from moments she remembers so vividly. ‘Civil War’ war was written alongside Brooklyn-bred producer and songwriter, Prospect Lux, in his Bedford Stuyvesant apartment while the two were listening to the sounds of the city. Lyrically, ‘Civil War’ dives deep into a ruthless battle inside of HOLDN that seemingly cannot be resolved. Accompanying the song’s release is the video, directed by Alexa San Roman, who is also behind videos for Now, Now and Marcaux. The music video showcases HOLDN’s dark, edgy exterior while still highlighting the sultry sound of her voice. She appears calm and collected in the midst of spinning chaos – alluding to inner turmoil while keeping a rather numb exterior.
HOLDN said, “‘Civil War’ is an in depth look into two opposing sides of the same mind; the ups and downs of life itself, relationships with other human beings, struggling with anxiety and depression and learning that those setbacks make decision making a bit less clear. ‘Civil War’ has true ‘city-grit’ in the production and overall tone. Sonic inspiration was pulled from sounds on the streets of New York City infused with organic instrumental sounds.”
